Toshiba's Home Nuclear Reactor

By Rob Beschizza December 18, 2007 | 5:36:38 PM

If we lived in a world where everyone was (a) smart and (b) trustworthy, Toshiba's micro-sized nuclear reactor, small enough to fit in the basement or a large shed, would be a slam-dunk solution to the energy/climate crisis.

Twenty foot long by six foot wide, the reactors produce 200kW of energy and run themselves: the entire thing is manufactured with the fuel within, and when it runs out, they can just send a truck to pick it up.

"Unlike traditional nuclear reactors the new micro reactor uses no control rods to initiate the reaction. The new revolutionary technology uses reservoirs of liquid lithium-6, an isotope that is effective at absorbing neutrons. The Lithium-6 reservoirs are connected to a vertical tube that fits into the reactor core. The whole whole process is self sustaining and can last for up to 40 years, producing electricity for only 5 cents per kilowatt hour, about half the cost of grid energy."

Waste, you say? Throw it in a mile-deep pit in New Mexico, or something.

Unfortunately, with the way nukes have been run, it's unlikely they'll be replacing every neighborhood' s electricity substation with one of these any time soon. It's claimed there are buyers in Japan and Europe. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, I recall, makes something similar, but bigger.

LocoGPS Module (GPS on iPhone)

Apple was smart enough to create a high-tech gadget i.e. the iPhone but failed to provide some of the necessary features and utilities that are required by today’s users. GPS i.e. Global Positioning System is a location identification system that connects to a GPS satellite and tells about the current position coordinates of a person using a GPS device. Almost all new gadgets and phones come integrated with GPS features however the Apple iPhone again fails to compete with other devices provided the fact that it does not have any GPS module.

PartFoundry have created a little piece of hardware that they call as the LocoGPS. LocoGPS is a GPS module specially built for the iPhone that electrically interfaces to the iPhone and allows you to use your iPhone just like any other GPS device.

To use the LocoGPS module you need have a hacked (jail broken) iPhone so in order to be able to use 3rd party applications. The software that runs this little piece of hardware is open source however the module has a price of $89 and shall start shipping in February 2008.

LocoGPS is currently being tested on the iPhone however an iPod Touch compatible hardware and software is also expected soon as mentioned on the developer’s official website.

Alternatively if you are a big fan of Google Maps, you can use the My Location (Beta) feature to get a GPS-like service on your Apple iPhone.

Let a Mesothelioma Lawyer Help

Author: Nick Johnson

When a person begins to experience mesothelioma symptoms and ultimately receives a mesothelioma diagnosis, he or she is often quite devastated. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that comes from exposure to asbestos, but it does not have to belong only to those that work with asbestos for many years.

It can also occur in family and friends that are exposed to the person who worked with asbestos. This often brings feelings of guilt to that person if his or her family members are afflicted. In addition, many people are not sure what they should do next, and they often feel lost after a mesothelioma diagnosis.

Contacting a mesothelioma attorney, though, is a good next step. This allows someone with knowledge and experience to take over the case and work to get compensation for the injured party and his or her family. Only through this kind of help from a mesothelioma lawyer can an individual that has received a mesothelioma diagnosis actually expect to receive compensation that is fair and just.

Companies that used asbestos extensively in the past are not simply going to hand over money to individuals that were "wronged" by this, and some of these individuals that do get sick will not do so for 20 to 50 years, making many companies argue that asbestos did not cause the problem. A mesothelioma lawyer can provide proof and court cases to back up claims of asbestos and the mesothelioma connection.

Mesothelioma is very specific to asbestos exposure, unlike other cancers that are caused by many different variables, and sometimes seem to be completely random, occurring in people that have no risk factors for them and no behaviors that would predispose them.

This makes it very difficult to argue that mesothelioma symptoms were caused by anything other than asbestos exposure. Despite this, companies that used asbestos in the past still fight to try to avoid paying out a lot of money to those that may be sick now, and a mesothelioma lawyer is needed if a person attempts recovery.

Through hiring a mesothelioma lawyer, years of skill, education, and experience can be taken to the courtroom, and most of these attorneys do not charge their clients anything unless they win the case.

Because of this, a person can safely find the right mesothelioma lawyer for him or her and receive compensation for the damage done by asbestos exposure without having to worry about out-of-pocket expenses.

Hiring a Mesothelioma Lawyer

Author: Nick Johnson

Any time a person considers hiring a lawyer, it is an important issue and requires thought. Today, there is a sue-happy mentality in many areas of the world, but especially in the United States. Because of the countless frivolous lawsuits that are seen in courtrooms today, many people feel that they do not want to sue, even if they have a legitimate case. They worry about what people will think of them. A person with a legitimate mesothelioma diagnosis should not worry about that, however. What others think is not important. What is important is hiring a mesothelioma attorney to provide the injured party with compensation for the damage that has been done.

Hiring a mesothelioma lawyer is a serious decision, and finding the right one can be very difficult, depending on the geographical location, income and specifically what a person is looking for in a lawyer. If experience is all that one wants, that is what should be looked for, but the best mesothelioma lawyer generally has a combination of experience, education, skills, abilities and personality. To find a mesothelioma attorney with all of these qualities while dealing with mesothelioma symptoms can be daunting, but many lawyers will offer free phone consultations at first, in order to determine whether someone with a mesothelioma diagnosis has a case that he or she feels can be won.

If the person with the mesothelioma symptoms cannot get around well, sometimes a mesothelioma lawyer will also come to that person's home and work with them to ensure that he or she has the best possible chance of winning the case. This is one of the services that should be looked for if it is needed. In addition, how well one works with the mesothelioma lawyer and how well he or she likes that individual's personality is important. It is very difficult to work with and spend time with someone that one does not like, and an illness can increase these kinds of problems. Finding a mesothelioma lawyer that the victim and the family feels comfortable with can help lower anxiety, alleviate fears, and create a better working relationship.

The education and experience that a mesothelioma attorney has should also be considered. Naturally, all lawyers must start somewhere, and having an attorney that is relatively new to the field of law is not necessarily a bad thing. Large or very serious cases, however, are usually assigned to more seasoned mesothelioma attorneys, because these people have the experience in the courtroom that is needed to have the highest chance of winning the case.

Windows Vista Search Saves 15 Minutes a Day

I just attended a Microsoft event and the speaker presented about SharePoint Enterprise Search. On a quick Vista marketing, he quickly mentioned that users would be able to save 15 minutes a day on searches when Vista is used. And he encouraged the audience not to wait 5 months to move to Vista, because by then, the organization should have already saved 1650 hours in searches nowithstanding all other time savings from other features of Vista.

I have definitely found the search of Windows Vista beneficial and so much faster than in XP. A lot of enteprises doesn’t allow installation of third party applications that replace the standard Windows XP search and given that Vista is a far better option, the speaker did have a point.

To think about it, so many features of Vista can save time for both the end user and tech support.

There are a lot of factors in a cost and savings analysis in the adoption of Vista, and 15 minutes of search savings is a pretty cool add-on.
